The Institute for the Deaf of Turin was conceived by the House of Savoy at the beginning of the Nighteenth's century to give support and education to deaf children and training skills to the personnel. Originally, the location of the Institution was Turin, in Via Assarotti. In 1965 the building was sold to the Municipality of Turin and with the proceeds a pił newer and larger building was constructed inPianezza, where school activities and educational programs in favour of the deaf were significantly increased.
By the end of the 70's, educational policies and pedagogical directions concerning the National Regulation of the Special Schools moved into a deep crisis. Many of these schools closed in the following decades. The Institute Directory Board opened the gates to both deaf and hearing students, saving an enormous heritage of experience. Besides the Special School activities held inside the Pianezza building compound, a new educational service aiming at improving the communication and integration skills of the sensory disabled which covered the whole territory was launched.
Today, the educational activities of the Institute are not only related to deaf students. Faithful to its original Statute, the Institute for the Deaf of Turin offers numerous other activities for teachers as well as for deaf trainers, through professional training and updating courses, conferences, seminars and publications.
The Institute for the Deaf of Turin is featured today as a non-profit Foundation, held by an Administration Board totally autonomous in the decisions taken, within the general aims of solidarity foreseen by its current Statute.
